Capstone Project: Stage 2 Instructions and Examples

Tim Bralower: Hi students, I’m just gonna run over the Capstone Project Coastal Vulnerability Audit Tool, or CDAT. I’m gonna run through what you need to fill out for each page. What I’m saying is pretty well on minimum, and if you have any questions, you should get in touch with the instructor. Anyway, so here’s the first page, and on this page you fill out the city that you’ve been assigned in stage one of the Capstone and the country. And then moving right along, here’s stage two. This is the physical system assessment. And in this page, you’re going to fill out information on coastal geomorphology and tectonics, coastal processes, common local coastal hazards, regional coastal hazards, and sea level that you include references here and in all other sections where relevant. You are allowed to use AI to do your research, but you may not use AI to copy straight in. So you cannot copy straight in from AI into the entries in the CVAT. You must rewrite everything in your own words, and there will be strict penalties if you just copy straight out of AI. But it’s a very useful research tool, as you know. 

Okay, so then after you fill out the audit part of stage two. You are going to include two to three total images on this page. On the physical system, including geomorphology processes and hazards. This will be for stage six, your city slide presentation. So we require that you find these images now and we will provide feedback on these images as you go along through stages two, three, and four. Okay, so two to three images on this page and two to three images on this page. That gives a total of four to six images for stage two. Moving right along to stage three. Stage three is the Engineering Infrastructure Assessment. And on this page, you will be researching information on shoreline engineering, flood control, beach management, non-traditional shoreline protection, and restoration. Described in all of these entries, once again, please include references that you find during your research. After stage three entries, you will have two to three images on this page for engineering, regulation, and restoration. Two to three images on this page on engineering, regulation, and restoration. So once again, four to six images helping you describe stage three topics for your city slide presentation due in stage six. Moving right along, we have two pages for stage four in the audit. 

Exposure and sensitivity of the population, adaptive capacity, adaptation to climate change on the first page. On the second page, disaster preparation, response, recovery, coastal policy one, and coastal policy two. All of these are described here. And please, again, contact the instructor if you have any questions. That’s stage four. Moving right along. The city slides for stage four. On this page, two to three images on exposure, adaptive capacity, hazard response, and policy. And again, on this page, two to three total images. So you’ll have four to six images for your city slide presentation stage six for your stage four topics. And then finally for stage four we require you to compile a map of the city showing the major features annotated with text and symbols conveying the most important parts. Again this will go into your city slide presentation. 

And finally we move along to stage five. On this page, we require you to enter information on site -specific concerns and considerations, things that are specific to your location. For example, hazards, tsunamis, sea level rise, things like that. Or you could describe a very unusual setting with, for example, a river estuary which floods regularly. Or you could describe a large population at risk for sea level rise things like that that you will enter on this page. And then on the second page, are recommendations based on your research. What are your recommended resiliency action plans for your city. So you need to think about these both of these elements for stage five a and b. Highest priority action and moving down to lower priority. This can include things like engineering plans this can include things like policy recommendations things like this for stage 5b and finally the references and key resources this is very important for your research. This is one page. You may require more pages for the references and key resources that you have found during your research. So there you go.
